Rocks at Rackwick Bay

Return to Rackwick

Return to Rackwick – Hoy

For so many people the trip to Rackwick is just so that they can go to visit the Old Man of Hoy. A walk of a few miles from Rackwick bay up the hillside and along the coast to the North to see, admire and for some to climb. My husband climbs as did my parents and even I managed a few routes in my earlier life, so like many others I was familiar with the films of Chris Bonington and Tom Patey climbing this iconic piece of rock. I had fully intended to do a picture inspired by the Old Man but although I admired it as a view my inspiration came that day as we returned along the path to Rackwick Bay.

It is often as I walk talking to one of my daughters that I see something and that is what sparks me to thinking ‘that would be good’. It must be the relaxed state of mind that sees more clearly than the mind that is seeking the inspiration. That was certainly the case here and also for ‘Hoy Hills’ a view further along the path getting closer to Rackwick.
